Imagine running through a landscape that looks like it’s straight out of a sci-fi movie about Mars. That’s what participants of the Comodoro Ultra Trail experienced as they traversed the unique and awe-inspiring terrain of the Rocas Coloradas Natural Protected Area in Comodoro Rivadavia. This stunning location, with its vibrant terracotta hues and surreal landscapes, provided the perfect setting for a challenging and rewarding trail race.
A Race in a Martian-Like Landscape
The first edition of the Comodoro Ultra Trail was held as part of the city’s 122nd-anniversary celebrations. Organized by the TMX Team and supported by the Ente de Turismo of Comodoro Rivadavia, this race took runners through a landscape that felt like another planet. The natural formations of the Rocas Coloradas area, with its ochre, yellow, and white hues, are so striking that the region has been nicknamed “Valle de Marte,” or Mars Valley.
Trail runners had the opportunity to explore this untouched natural wonder, running on trails that highlight the beauty of Patagonia’s rugged terrain. With the event designed to preserve the area’s natural environment, participants were encouraged to respect and protect the land as they raced through it.
Why the Comodoro Ultra Trail is Unique
The Comodoro Ultra Trail offers a distinctive challenge, unlike typical trail races. It combines a variety of terrain, from sandy beaches to steep climbs, creating an ever-changing and demanding course.
Key Features:
- Steep ascents and loose soil, particularly on the climb to the summit of Pico Salamanca, 576 meters above sea level.
- Fast, technical descents and sections of flat trails that require constant attention to avoid rocks and pits.
- Panoramic views of Patagonia, framed by mountains to the west and the turquoise Argentine Sea to the east.
A Personal Journey of Growth
For many, the Comodoro Ultra Trail was not just about the physical challenge but also about personal growth. One runner, who had started running after quitting smoking, unexpectedly landed on the podium, finishing second in his category. This achievement became a milestone in his journey toward even greater challenges, like the 100-mile Patagonia Run.
With its stunning scenery and unique course, the Comodoro Ultra Trail has firmly established itself as a must-run event for trail runners seeking both adventure and personal triumph.
